Eerst maakte Monsanto boeren met lage prijzen warm voor de teelt van transgene soja. Ook toen het wist dat sommige landen haar patenten niet erkenden. Toen boeren eenmaal waren gewonnen voor haar product, is het de gebruiksvoorwaarden gaan aanscherpen.
Dat meldt het Agrarisch Dagblad. Dit lijkt op de wijze waarop een dealer drugsgebruikers voor zich wint. Dit mag niet worden toegestaan, vooral niet als het gaat om veelgebruikt voedsel.

Ministerie moet plaatsen proefveld genetisch gemodificeerde aardappelen bekend maken
De ministeries van VROM en Landbouw moeten onder meer in Werkendam plaatsen van proefvelden met genetisch gemodificeerde aardappelen openbaar maken. Dat heeft de Raad van State bepaald.
Met de uitspraak stelt de raad Greenpeace in het gelijk die 7 vergunningen aanvocht die zijn verleend aan Avebe, Pioneer Hi-Bred en Monsanto door beide ministeries.
Er moet controleerbaar zijn op welke afstand proefvelden liggen van velden met gewone of biologische planten.

Slecht onderzoek van EFSA naar veiligheid gentech-maïs Monsanto
Het advies dat de Europese voedselveiligheidsorganisatie Efsa gaf over de veiligheid van gentech-mais van Monsanto, het enige voor teelt in Europa toegelaten gentechgewas, schiet volgens Greenpeace en Friends of the Earth ernstig tekort.
Het Agrarisch dagblad meldt: “Efsa negeert onderzoek of redeneert onderzoek weg, waarin wordt aangetoond dat de insecticide die de maïs produceert tot schade kan leiden voor Europese vlinders en andere insecten.”

Noord-Amerika laat transgeen maïs Monsanto en Dow AgroSciences toe
Monsanto en Dow AgroSciences hebben voor de Verenigde Staten en Canada toelating verkregen voor SmartStax-zaaizaad, aldus het Agrarisch Dagblad.
Het betreft een genetisch gemodificeerde maïsvariant waarbij acht genen zijn ingebouwd die de plant beschermen tegen insecten en herbiciden.
Er worden meerdere verschillende resistentiegenen ingebouwd zodat het gewas langer stand houdt.

Britain is planning to quietly spend up to £100m on support for genetically modified crops for the world's poor despite not having allowed any of the controversial foods to be grown commercially at home.
The Guardian reports: “A new white paper shows the government is committed to dramatically increasing spending on high-tech agriculture in the next five years, much of which will be on GM crop research. De Canadese boer Percy Schmeiser treft in 1997 genetisch gemanipuleerd koolzaad aan langs zijn akker. Schmeiser beweert dat het zaad is overgewaaid.
Als hij zijn land weer inzaait met dit zaad, wordt hij door gentech-reus Monsanto voor het gerecht gesleept wegens schending van patenten. Zo begint een slepend juridisch gevecht waar het dagblad Trouw een artikele aan wijdt.

Doctors Warn: Avoid Genetically Modified Food
On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called on “Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.”
Healthfreedomalliance reports: “They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. AAEM’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.”
