UK to spend £100m on supporting GM crops for world's poor
Britain is planning to quietly spend up to £100m on support for genetically modified crops for the world's poor despite not having allowed any of the controversial foods to be grown commercially at home.
The Guardian reports: “A new white paper shows the government is committed to dramatically increasing spending on high-tech agriculture in the next five years, much of which will be on GM crop research. Biofortified crops, containing added vitamins, will receive £80m of development money, £60m will go on researching drought-resistant maize for Africa and a further £24m will be spent on pest resistance.” http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/jul/19/gm-crops-aid-uk-funding

Doctors Warn: Avoid Genetically Modified Food
On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called on “Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.”
Healthfreedomalliance reports: “They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. AAEM’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.”
They conclude, “There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation,” as defined by recognized scientific criteria. “The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.”

The American Academy Of Environmental Medicine Calls For Immediate Moratorium On Genetically Modified Foods
Wichita, KS - The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) today released its position paper on Genetically Modified foods stating that "GM foods pose a serious health risk" and calling for a moratorium on GM foods.
Citing several animal studies, the AAEM concludes "there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects" and that "GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health."

Strange Martial Law via Food Control: HR 2749
HR 2749 is a strange bill in many ways. While the other “food safety” bills have been around since winter, allowing for much public discussion on the internet, HR 2749 has only suddenly appeared. It is a mutant conglomeration of the worst of the other bills, with the addition of one very original part – martial law.

Monsanto is Back to Force Genetically Engineered Wheat Down Your Throat
Five years after shelving plans for biotech wheat, Monsanto is re-entering the wheat business with the purchase of a Montana seed company, OrganicConsumers reports.
Accrding to ths site, Creve Coeur-based Monsanto, the biggest seller of genetically modified seed, agreed to pay $45 million for WestBred LLC and could introduce new wheat varieties within a few years.
WestBred specializes in wheat germplasm, the seed's genetic material. The size of the deal isn't significant for a company such as Monsanto, whose annual sales exceed $10 billion.
But the company's return to a market it abruptly exited in 2004 is noteworthy, especially at a time when demand for wheat to make breads and pasta is growing.
The statement comes as Monsanto looks to its seed business as sales of Roundup herbicide are declining at a faster-than-expected pace because of increased global competition.

Kwekers strijden tegen chemiereuzen

Whole Foods Market seeks non-GMO seal
Whole Foods Market has partnered with the Non-GMO Project to test for the presence of genetically modified (GM) ingredients in its private label products in order to independently verify them as GM-free.
Foodnavigator reports: “Although the USDA requires that certified organic produce must also be GM-free, there is no government requirement for labeling of foods containing GM ingredients in the non-organic sector.”
“And for some crops, it is becoming increasingly difficult for manufacturers to source non-GM versions. GM soy, for example – the most widely grown GM crop – now accounts for 90 percent of soy produced in the US.”
